How Our Reception - Y1 (Advanced) Class Works

Who it's for
Advanced Reception–Year 1 learners who already understand and speak Italian with confidence, usually through regular use at home.
This group is suitable for children who can communicate naturally in Italian and are ready to move beyond simple exposure towards more accurate and structured language use.

A fully Italian environment
Lessons take place entirely in Italian, with language carefully adapted to the age and development of the children.
Teachers model accurate language, expand children’s speech naturally and encourage full sentences, while maintaining a warm, playful and reassuring environment.

Accuracy, language awareness and early literacy
Children practise speaking, listening, reading and writing, with activities adapted to their level and development.
Grammar and vocabulary are introduced through stories, songs and guided activities that help children become more accurate and confident in their Italian.
The aim is to enrich vocabulary and language structures, support pre-literacy (rhymes, sounds, early reading), and build awareness of how Italian works — always in ways that reflect the child’s age and the educational path of Italian scuola dell’infanzia.
Inspired by the
Indicazioni Nazionali
This class is based on the Indicazioni Nazionali per il curricolo published by the Italian Ministry of Education, which guide both scuola dell’infanzia (ages 3–6) and scuola primaria (ages 6–11).
Reception and Year 1 in the UK broadly correspond to the final year of scuola dell’infanzia and the first year of scuola primaria in Italy.
In line with these national guidelines, the programme supports:
– meaningful communication and active listening in Italian
– early awareness of how language works
– the development of all four language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) in a playful but structured environment
We take inspiration from the Indicazioni's emphasis on oral language, storytelling, vocabulary in use, and creative activities that help young learners become more accurate and confident in their Italian.
The programme is developed with guidance from an experienced teacher currently working in an Italian scuola dell’infanzia, ensuring it reflects the latest educational practices in Italy.
