Reception - Y1

Basic

A gentle introduction to Italian for children with little or no prior exposure — building confidence step by step through play, routine, and carefully guided activities.

How Our Reception - Y1 (Basic) Class Works

Raising Hands

Who it's for

This class is designed for children in Reception and Year 1 who:

  • Do not speak Italian

  • Have little or no understanding of Italian

  • Need a fully supported introduction to the language

This is the right group if your child would not be able to follow a lesson conducted mainly in Italian.

A gradual path into Italian

Children are introduced to Italian through:

  • Simple, high-frequency words and phrases

  • Songs, repetition, and routines

  • Visual support and gestures

  • Structured, guided interaction

We do not expect children to speak immediately.

The focus is on:

  • Understanding

  • Confidence

  • Participation

Over time, children begin to:

  • Recognise familiar words

  • Follow simple instructions

  • Respond with increasing confidence

Learning through guidance and play

Activities are carefully designed to balance:

  • Structure → so children feel secure

  • Play → so learning feels natural

Examples include:

  • Action songs and movement games

  • Matching and sorting activities

  • Guided speaking with support

  • Simple storytelling with visual cues

Unlike the Intermediate group, this class includes:

  • More teacher guidance

  • More English support where needed

  • A slower, more scaffolded progression
