Reception
Intermediate & Advanced
A welcoming Italian class for children starting Reception who already understand or speak some Italian.
Through stories, songs, games, conversation and creative activities, children develop their language at an appropriate level while learning alongside others of the same age.
How Our Reception Class Works

Who it's for
This class is designed for children in Reception who:
-
Already understand Italian
-
May understand well but reply mainly in English
-
May use some Italian words or short sentences
-
May already communicate confidently in Italian
Children should be able to follow a lesson conducted in Italian, but they do not need to have the same speaking level.
During Autumn Term 2026, Intermediate and Advanced children will learn together. This allows children of the same age to establish shared classroom routines while the teacher observes how each child understands and uses Italian.
From Spring Term 2027, the children will be separated into dedicated Intermediate and Advanced classes.

A fully Italian environment
Italian is used throughout the lesson, supported by:
-
Familiar routines and repetition
-
Visual prompts and gestures
-
Stories, songs and practical activities
-
Clear, age-appropriate instructions
-
Encouragement and teacher modelling
Children are not expected to produce the same amount of language. Those who are less confident can demonstrate understanding, repeat key language and gradually begin to speak more.
Children who already communicate confidently in Italian are encouraged to use longer sentences, richer vocabulary and more detailed explanations.
This first term also gives the teacher an opportunity to understand each child’s language profile before placing them in the most suitable class from the Spring Term.

Learning through stories, play and interaction
Activities are carefully designed to include:
-
Stories and simple role play
-
Songs, rhymes and movement
-
Language games
-
Creative and practical activities
-
Guided conversation
-
Group routines and collaborative tasks
Children can participate in the same activity at different levels. One child might identify, choose or repeat a word, while another describes, explains or retells using complete sentences.
This allows every child to take part while receiving an appropriate level of support and challenge. It also enables the teacher to assess the children naturally through their participation, rather than through formal testing.
